CSR Racing, The Amazing Spider-Man, Hipstamatic and more on this week’s top grossing iOS apps

NaturalMotion’s new game CSR Racing is a big hit in its first week of release, taking the No. 1 spot on the top grossing iPhone app chart this week, knocking down last week’s champion Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North, which falls to the No. 3 spot. CSR Racing is free-to-play, and monetizes through in-app purchases.  Meanwhile, comiXology’s Comics takes the No. 1 spot on the iPad charts.

Moving further down the charts, Gameloft’s The Amazing Spider-Man takes the No. 11 spot on the top grossing iPhone app chart and the No. 8 spot on the iPad app chart. The game is the latest in a long series of hits for the French company — since its release on June 28, the $6.99 paid app has he game has hit the top five on the top grossing games chart in 72 countries, no doubt helped by the popularity of its source material.

Finally Hipstamatic also has a strong finish this week, moving up 23 spots to land at No. 21 on the top grossing iPhone app chart. The paid camera app is currently on sale for $0.99 and was just updated on July 3 with a new free lens, a new free film, a new portrait SnapPak, and the ability to add place tags to photos and more detailed Facebook Timeline sharing options.

Want to be a top grossing iOS app — you need to earn about $5M a month now

Having an app on the top grossing iOS app charts is more lucrative than ever — according to new figures revealed by TinyCo, an app that has maintained a rank between No. 5 and No. 15 on the top grossing iOS app chart has more than doubled its earnings year-over-year.

According to figures released the San Francisco-based mobile developer in a recent blog post, an app’s revenue had to increase by 85 percent between Q1 and Q3 2011 in order to maintain a chart position between No. 5 and No. 15 on the top grossing app charts. By Q1 2012, that app would have to earn a further 48 percent more than it was earning in Q3 2011 just to stay in the same position.

Although TinyCo doesn’t reveal exact earnings figures, we can estimate how much a top grossing app is earning today based on their information. Last summer, we had heard from several sources that a top grossing app was earning about $2 to $3 million a month on iOS. This means by Q3 the same app was earning about $3.5 million a month in order to keep up with the 85 percent increase reported by TinyCo. By the first quarter of this year, a top grossing app’s earnings were likely over $5 million a month as the rate of revenue growth on iOS increased by a further 43 percent.

While these numbers are more than double what we’ve heard before, they’re within the realm of possibility. In December, Epic’s Infinity Blade II earned $5 million in its first month of release. In May, GREE revealed the newly acquired Funzio was earning more than $5 million a month from its suite of social and mobile games, and the highest average chart position those games held on the top grossing iOS app charts was No. 20.

Considering the amount of new iPhones and iPads activated during the year and the increased competition in the iOS app store, it’s not unreasonable to conclude apps are earning more now. TinyCo also credits the shift towards the free-to-play monetization model with the rise in app revenues, restating the widely-accepted fact that free apps drive higher average revenue per paying user and produce users with a higher lifetime value.

Update: TinyCo has reached out to us to clarify that its figures were based on the daily, not the monthly revenue figures for top grossing iOS apps. According to TinyCo, revenues based on daily chart rankings have increased increased in line with the percentages outlined in their original blog post. They estimate an app holding a rank between No. 5 and No. 15 on the top grossing app chart in Q1 2012 was earning as much as $80,000 per day. However, the company also pointed out an app’s chart position and revenues can ebb and flow based on seasonality, competition and many other factors outlined in their original blog post.

DragonVale, Global War HD and Magic 2013 and more on this week’s top grossing iOS apps

Not much change at the top of top grossing charts this week, with Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North claiming the No. 1 spot on the top grossing iPhone app charts for the third week in a row. Backflip’s DragonVale takes the No. 1 spot on the top grossing iPad charts.

This week’s fastest rising app is Machine Zone’s Global War HD, which climbs 22 spots to take the No. 17 spot on the top grossing iPhone app chars. DeNA’s hit card-battle title Rage of Bahamut maintains its rank from last week, holding the No. 5 spot on the top grossing iPhone app chart. Speaking of card games, moving over to the iPad charts, the new mobile version of Wizards of the Coast’s collectible card game Magic 2013 takes the No. 6 spot.

Emerging top grossing iOS apps: Pocket Planes, Bento 4 for iPad and Magic 2013

This week’s top grossing charts are lead once again by Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North, which takes the No. 1 spot on both the iPhone and the iPad app charts. Last week’s leader, DeNA’s card-battle game, Rage of Bahamut, slips down the top grossing charts but doesn’t leave the top ten, settling in at the No. 6 position this week.

Newly released apps performed strongly this week: NimbleBit’s Pocket Planes puts in solid work to land in the No. 11 spot on the top grossing iPhone app chart and FileMaker’s paid productivity app Bento 4 for iPad took the No. 8 spot on the top grossing iPad app chart.

Finally, fans of card games are bound to be happy, as Wizards of the Coast brings the world’s most popular collectible card game — Magic: The Gathering — to iOS in the form of its new iPad-only app, Magic 2013. A mobile version of its popular downloadable console title, Duels of the Planeswalkers, Magic 2013 is designed to appeal to both new players and seasoned veterans of the game. The game is free-to-play, but players can unlock additional content in the app for $9.99. The app is currently the No. 15 top grossing iPad app.

As we predicted last week, DeNA’s card-battle game Rage of Bahamut has risen to the No. 1 spot on the iOS top grossing charts less than a month after its release. The free-to-play game is now the top grossing app on both iOS and Android.

Meanwhile on the iPad charts, Backflip Studio’s perennial favorite DragonVale takes No. 1 spot again, maintaining the position for the fourth week in a row. The game was last updated on May 17 to add a new area called Gemstone Island.  This week’s fastest rising app is Machine Zone’s social RPG Original Gangstaz HD, which climbs 18 spots to hold the No. 10 position on the top grossing app charts. According to the game’s official app store listing, it boasts over 8 million players.

Emerging top grossing iOS apps: Dragonvale, Rage of Bahamut and Quickoffice Pro HD

Backflip Studios appears to be back in command of the top grossing iOS charts, claiming the No. 1 spot on both the iPhone and iPad  charts for the third week in with its game DragonVale. As we pointed out last week, the game has been one of the steadiest performers on iOS in 2012.

This week’s most notable chart placement is DeNA’s Mobage game Rage of Bahamut. The game has already topped the Android charts for more than six weeks, and now the card-battle game seems like it will reach the top of the iOS charts too, climbing to No. 7 on the top grossing iPhone apps chart this week. The game was released on May 16.

On the iPad charts Quickoffice’s productivity app Quickoffice Pro HD takes the No. 3 spot. Newly acquired by Google, the app hasn’t left the top 25 of the top grossing iPad charts since February, according to AppData.

Emerging top grossing iOS apps: DragonVale, Dragon Story and Slotomatia

Backflip Studios claims the No. 1 spot on both the iPhone and iPad top grossing charts for the second week in a row with it’s animal care game DragonVale. The app has been one of the steadiest performers on the iOS charts in 2012. According to AppData the game hasn’t dropped below No. 6 on the top grossing iPhone app chart and No. 10 on the top grossing iPad app charts since Jan. 1.

TeamLava’s answer to DragonVale, its similarly themed Dragon Story, also performs well this week, climbing two spots to No. 12 on the top grossing iPhone charts.

Playtika had a strong week too, taking the No. 3 spot on the top grossing iPhone charts with its game Slotomania, and the No. 2 spot on the iPad charts with Slotomania HD. The non-HD version of Slotomania was also the No. 11 highest grossing iPad app. The consistent performance of Playtika’s standard resolution iPhone app on the iPad charts makes a compelling argument against universal apps for developers wishing to maximize their revenues.

Emerging top grossing iOS apps: DragonVale, Minecraft and Bingo Bash

Colorado-based Backflip studios notches up yet another No. 1 this week as its perennially popular animal-care game DragonVale climbs to the top of the top grossing iPhone and iPad charts. The game was last updated on May 17 with a new area called Gemstone Island, new dragons to collect and breeding habitat upgrades that reduce the time needed to breed new dragons.

Last week’s leader, Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North drops to the No. 2 spot on the top grossing iPhone chart and No. 6 on the iPad chart. Mojang’s Minecraft – Pocket Edition also makes gains this week, inching its way back into the top 10 of the top grossing iPhone app chart after spending most of the month in the lower 20s. the game was last updated on April 23.

Although few new faces made the top grossing app charts this week, the iOS version of BitRhymes’ Facebook game Bingo Bash has finally managed to crack into the top grossing iPad app charts. The app has been slowly gaining steam on mobile, rising from No. 72 on the top grossing app chart a month ago to No. 25 this week.

Emerging top grossing apps: Kingdoms of Camelot, Race or Die 2 and Quickoffice Pro HD

Kabam once again leads the top grossing iOS charts again, claiming the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row with Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North. The game has managed to stay at No. 1, or close to it, since the end of March — an impressive run at the top.

This week’s fastest gaining iPhone app was Machine Zone’s Race Or Die 2. Despite being a fairly standard mid-core, text-based RPG, the game has proven to be a big hit with players, shooting to the top of both the free and top grossing charts since its debut in early May. Our full review of the game can be found here.

On the iPad charts utility Quickoffice Pro HD breaks the iron grip of the popular games genre on the No. 1 position, landing developer Quickoffice at the top of the charts. Like Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot, Quickoffice Pro HD has been maintaining a top 10 position on the top grossing charts for the better part of a month. Unlike many of the top grossing iOS apps, Quickoffice Pro HD is a premium-priced paid app, costing $19.99.

Emerging top grossing iOS apps: Kingdoms of Camelot, Crime City and Slots Journey

Kabam and Playtika lead this week’s roundup of top grossing iOS apps. Both developers have held the No. 1 spot at one time or another in the past several weeks and neither have been far from a top 10 ranking since April. Kabam’s Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North has shown particular strength, despite stiff competition from previous chart leaders like Zynga Poker and Backflip Studios’ DragonVale.

Playtika’s Slotomania HD was this week’s top grossing iPad app, but the slots genre proved to be more popular on the iPhone charts, with two slots games making our round-up this week.

The non-HD version of Slotomania took the No. 2 spot on the top grossing iPhone apps chart and Ukrainian developer Fish Sticks Services closed out the bottom of our charts with its game Slots Journey snagging the No. 25 spot. In the past month Slots Journey has climbed from ranking of No. 86 to No. 25 on the top grossing chart, so we’ll be keeping an eye on the fast rising app.

This week’s biggest gainer was Funzio’s Crime City, which rose 12 spaces up the iPhone top grossing charts to No. 14. GREE’s latest earnings report revealed the game’s developer Funzio was seeing sales in excess of $5 million a month in April, largely on the strong performance of its three iOS titles, Crime City, Modern War and Kingdom Age.
