TSA new policy can mean a missed flight if your phone is dead

tsaTravelers on direct flights to the US should be prepared to turn on their smartphones and other devices for security clearance. The announcement was made on TSA’s website on Sunday, July 6, 2014:

As the traveling public knows, all electronic devices are screened by security officers. During the security examination, officers may also ask that owners power up some devices, including cell phones. Powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft. South Korea Forces Apple and Google to change app store refund policy

For South Koreans, getting refunds from Apple and Google for less-than-stellar apps just got a lot easier. The new law comes from the Korea Fair Trade Commission, which is stepping in to revise app store policies from Apple and Google.

Irish pub using only Snapchat to seek potential job applicants

Perhaps it’s time to heap some affections onto the temporary messaging app Snapchat. After all, some lucky bartenders might use it to find an ideal job at a pub.

The pub is called Sober Lane, a Dublin bar opening in July, whilst making an offer some job seekers might not be able to refuse. The pub’s owner, Ernest Cantillion has received no fewer than 2,000 messages regarding the job openings since announcing it publicly via Twitter. San Francisco ousts parking apps for poaching public parking

A San Francisco City Attorney has issued a stern public notice to Monkey Parking to cease and desist. The app allows users to bid off their public parking spaces when they are ready to leave, which stirs up a bidding war between drivers seeking elusive city parking spots.

The peer-to-peer bidding app is technically illegal according to San Francisco Police Code section 63(s) which states that anyone who enters into a lease, rental, agreement, or contract for public parking can face a penalty of $300 for each violation. This means drivers using the app can face a fine for each violation. (more…)

Health & fitness app growth outpacing other apps by 87%

Health and fitness apps are experiencing major growth this year, more so than any other year, according to data from Flurry Analytics. From December of 2013 to June of 2014, apps grew by 33% while health & fitness apps grew by 62%. This is attributed to the growth of devices that now support and help users track their physical activities in addition to independent apps that can perform similar functions. (more…)

Yahoo! acquires fantasy sport app developer Bignoggins

Yahoo-Acquires-Another-Mobile-App-Developer

Yahoo has been on a shopping spree since its purchase of Tumblr on June 20th.  Yahoo purchased the one-man start-up Bignoggins Productions on Monday to strengthen its own fantasy sports apps offerings.

Bignoggins has developed popular paid fantasy sports apps such as Fantasy Monster and Draft Monster. While Yahoo will not continue distributing these applications, it will integrate these apps technologies into its own fantasy sports applications.

Bignoggins founder, Jerry Shen, will be joining Yahoo’s mobile engineering team. He has also announced they have planned on hiring new talent through his blog.

NY Times limits content for non-subscribers, revisits app pay model

Starting June 27, The New York Times will begin limiting non-subscribing, mobile app users to access only three articles per day. Prior to this change, the daily newspaper app would provide nonpaying users with 10-15 free articles from the Top News section.
