Kik Messenger updated with new tools for deciding who to connect with
Kik has released the newest version of its popular Kik Messenger app, giving users more options for controlling their conversations, and controlling who can contact them. The platform with over 120 million registered users now allows its community to easily delete, block or report an unknown contact, by creating a separate section for messages from ‘new’ users.
While the ‘Block’ feature did technically exist prior to this app update, it’s been given more prominence in this new version, as users can block unknown contacts, while also hiding messages from people they don’t know, unless they manually choose to view them. These tools aim to help users more safely communicate with others from school, work and around the world, by protecting them from unwanted contact.
“Over the past year we’ve seen Kik become the top app used to chat one-to-one with your friends from other social apps,” said Kik CEO Ted Livingston. “A great and safe messaging experience has always been our top priority, and we’re excited to introduce new tools that will give our users even more control over their conversations on Kik. We believe this new and different approach makes Kik even better and safer for our users.”
These tools join existing Kik features, like the use of usernames, rather than phone numbers and email addresses for identification. In this way, users can block or avoid others based on username, and their own phone numbers and personal contact information remains private. Blocked users aren’t notified that they’ve actually been blocked.
Kik is available to download for free on iOS and Google Play. Over 275,000 new people join the app each day. Check back soon to follow the app on AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.
