QuizUp developer Plain Vanilla Games secures $22 million in funding
QuizUp developer Plain Vanilla Games has raised $22 million in funding, led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Tencent Holdings and other existing investors in the app. The QuizUp mobile trivia platform was released in November, and quickly climbed the free iOS app charts.
This round brings Plain Vanilla’s total funding to more than $27 million, with another $2 million in funding having been announced just days after the QuizUp app launched.
“The popularity of QuizUp has been as exciting as it has been overwhelming,” said Thor Fridriksson, founder and CEO of Plain Vanilla Games, in a statement. “We built social elements like messages and discussions into the social trivia network from the beginning because we wanted to help people connect over shared interests. But we’ve been blown away by the number of people who are already creating communities in QuizUp to discuss and debate their passions.”
QuizUp offers almost 300 trivia quiz topics, from holidays and sports to specific television shows and movies. Since launch, players are spending an average of 30 minutes per day inside the app, and have sent over 11 million messages via the app’s chat feature.
“The level of engagement in QuizUp is stunning,” added Roelof Botha, partner at Sequoia Capital. “Thor and his team struck the perfect balance of human interaction and gameplay to create an experience that is resonating with millions of gamers around the world. We’re thrilled to support Plain Vanilla’s continued growth and can’t wait for all that’s to come in the new year.”
