Apple officially unveils iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S, releasing this month
At today’s Apple event in California, Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S, its next generation iPhones, due out later this month. New details were also revealed for the upcoming iOS 7 operating system.
The iPhone 5C [pictured below] has been designed as a revamped iPhone 5, complete with A6 chip, 4-inch Retina display, 8-megapixel camera and all new color choices in a plastic casing. The iPhone 5C is available in green, yellow, blue, pink and white, and will launch in the US on September 20. Pre-orders will launch on September 13, with two models available. The 16GB model costs $99, while the 32GB option costs $199 with a two-year contract.
The iPhone 5S, meanwhile, includes dramatic improvements over the original iPhone 5. The true next-generation iPhone includes the first ever 64-bit A7 chip in a phone, offering faster performance throughout the device.
The iPhone 5S includes an updated 8-megapixel iSight camera with f/2.2 aperture and improved performance in lowlight conditions. The A7 chip, combined with the new camera app in iOS 7, will allow users to capture photos with two-times faster auto-focus and automatic image and video stabilization.
Furthermore, iPhone 5S introduces “True Tone” flash, which adjusts colors and intensities across 1,000 combinations, so photos taking with flash appear more natural. Skin tone and lamps in dark light, for instance, won’t take on the famous “yellow” hue found in photos taken on other devices.
For improved security, iPhone 5S introduces Touch ID, a fingerprint scanner that is built into the home button. All fingerprint information is encrypted and securely stored within the A7 chip inside the iPhone 5S, but is never stored on any Apple servers or on iCloud.
The iPhone 5S will also launch on September 20. It comes in three models: the 16GB option for $199, a 32GB model for $299 and a 64GB option for $399 in the US, with a two-year contract.
In addition to new devices, Apple confirmed a September 18 release date for iOS 7, the company’s newest operating system. iOS 7 will launch for free on iPhone 4+, iPad 2+, iPad Mini and 5th generation iPod Touch. iOS 7 will introduce over 200 new features, including a male voice option for Siri, Twitter search and Wikipedia integration, and the previously unveiled iTunes Radio.
