GameMaker: Studio introduces YoYo Compiler and cross-platform Shader support
YoYo Games, maker of the 2D games creation engine GameMaker: Studio, has announced the engine’s largest update since launching in May 2012. The Version 1.2 update brings the YoYo Compiler to developers, allowing projects to run 100x faster across all supported platforms, including mobile devices.
The YoYo Compiler was designed to improve CPU-intensive areas of game development, including artificial intelligence, real-time lighting, enhanced physics, real time geometry deformation, collision and data manipulation and more.
For example, without the YoYo Compiler, a zombie survival game may only support 250 zombies at 60 frames-per-second (FPS). With the new Compiler, that number increases to 2,500 zombies, while remaining at 60 FPS, as seen below.
The update also includes cross-platform Shader support, furthering developers’ abilities to create an app and then publish it across multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, HTML 5, Windows Phone 8 and more.
“Today’s update raises the bar in the visual quality and the complexity of games that can be made in GameMaker: Studio,” said Russell Kay, chief technology officer at YoYo Games, via a company release. “Our goal with today’s update and all future enhancements to GameMaker: Studio is that the imagination be the limiting factor in the game development process, not the technology.”
The YoYo Compiler is available for free to current users of GameMaker: Studio Master Collection, but is available as a $299 add-on for others. GameMaker: Studio is particularly popular among independent developers, having been downloaded over 1 million times. According to YoYo Games, the platform is quickly approaching 20,000 daily active users.
