Mobile messaging app imo.im is the latest in a growing group of applications that now supports video chat. The launch of video chat in imo messenger beta on Android follows the company’s last update, Broadcasts, which offers social discovery tools in addition to the app’s communication options.
imo.im’s video update allows users to chat with others for free using Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G internet connections (standard data usage would apply). The video chat system can connect users anywhere in the world, while the application’s regular features still allow for group and private chats, VoIP calls and standard voice messages.
imo recently closed a $13 million Series B round of funding, with the investment being used to grow the imo Network and provide future updates based on user feedback and requests.
“This has been a very exciting year for us so far. In addition to this video chat announcement, we recently launched Broadcasts, our new social discovery feature,” said Ralph Harik, CEO of imo, via a company release. “We are committed to providing the best in instant messaging and social discovery and are looking forward to launching video chat on our iOS and Android apps in the coming months.”
The mobile messaging landscape has grown rapidly this year. Applications like MessageMe and WhatsApp Messenger are leading the way in the US app market, while Kakao Talk and WeChat are blazing a trail in Asia, pulling in more than 100 million and 300 million registered users each, respectively.
These messaging apps succeed via their inclusion of additional features, outside of a phone’s standard text and photo messaging options. Stickers, for instance, have given these apps a large revenue stream, as users pay flat rates to purchase emoticons for use in text chat conversations.
The imo messanger beta is now available to download for free on Android. Once video chat has been refined and stabilized, it will be ported over to the standard version of the application.
