Emerging top grossing iOS Apps: Draw Something, Final Fantasy Tactics and Zombies, Run!

Much like last week, this week’s top grossing charts were lead on both iPad and iPhone by Colorado-based Backflip Studios and its free-to-play animal care game, DragonVale. Another Chinese developer also did well this week, with Hoolai Games’ 胡莱三国 (Hu Lai Countries) snagging the No. 10 spot on the iPhone charts. The quirky running meets zombies fitness adventure game Zombies, Run! also had a strong debut in the No. 24 spot.

This week’s top grossing iPhone apps

Draw Something – The paid version of OMGPOP’s social take on Pictionary, Draw Something leads our top grossing charts in the No. 2 position this week. On sale for $0.99 for a limited time, Draw Something features turn-based gameplay and allows users to challenge friends on other platforms (Android, iPad) and over Facebook and Twitter.

胡莱三国 (Hu Lai Countries) -  Hoolai Games makes the No. 10 spot on the top grossing charts with its free-to-play Three Kingdoms inspired game, 胡莱三国 (Hu Lai Countries).  Likely on the top of the U.S. iTunes charts due to black card scams, the app is a legitimately popular best-seller in China.

Galaxy Empire – Independent developer Tap4Fun takes the No. 12 spot this week with its game Galaxy Empire. The mobile MMO challenges players to colonize an alien planet, construct buildings, collect natural resources and wage interstellar war to expand territory. The game monetizes through in-app purchases.

MLB.com At Bat – Another sports-league companion app, Major League Baseball’s MLB.com At Bat makes its debut on the top grossing iPhone charts in the No. 13 position. The basic app is free, but users must purchase a subscription in order to listen to live radio, view stats or look at in-game highlights.

Zombies, Run! – After being successfully funded through a Kickstarter project, Six to Start’s quirky fitness app, Zombies, Run! takes the No. 24 spot on the top grossing iPhone app charts. The app itself is an audio game, and the only way to progress through the story is to go on real-life runs. Zombies, Run! costs $7.99.

This week’s top grossing iPad apps

[Update] DragonVale – This week’s top grossing iPhone and iPad app is Backflip StudiosDragonVale. The game has shown surprising resilience since climbing up the charts last year, fighting off quite a few competitors and hasn’t dropped lower than No. 5 on the iPad charts in a month. DragonVale was last updated on Feb. 22 to add a Fountain of Youth, which allows players to permanently turn a grown dragon into a cuter baby dragon.

[Update] NYTimes for iPad – The New York Times for iPad surges up the top grossing iPad charts to the No. 3 spot this week. The app, which monetizes through in-app subscriptions, was just updated on Feb. 22 to allow readers to save articles from a new folder button.

[Update] Fairway Solitaire HD – Big Fish Games’ Fairway Solitaire HD appears to have some staying power, still making appearances on the charts two weeks after its debut, a rare occurrence for most of Big Fish’s titles. This week’s No. 30 top grossing app, Fairway Solitaire HD is free to download, but the entire game must be unlocked through a $2.99 in-app purchase. The iPad version of the game includes 350 holes, four mini games and 32 trophies to collect.

[Update] The New Yorker Magazine - News makes a second appearance on the top grossing charts this week with The New Yorker Magazine app taking the No. 38 spot. Published by Condé Nast, the app is free and monetizes through in app subscriptions. A year of issues costs $59.99.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions - Closing out the top grossing iPad charts in the No. 47 spot this week is Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. The iOS version of the game is a port of the 2007 PSP game, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, which was itself a remake of the 1997 PS1 classic, Final Fantasy Tactics. While it does cost an impressive $17.99, the game is over 60 hours long.
