Apple has paid $4 billion to developers over lifetime of its app store
Apple’s chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer said today that the company has now paid out more than $4 billion to developers, including $700 million in the fourth quarter.
This implies the App Store has generated more than $5.7 billion in revenue over its lifetime, and Apple has earned roughly $1.7 billion dollars from its 30 percent cut of revenues. In October, Apple revealed it had paid out $3 billion to developers over the lifetime of the App Store.
On Christmas Day alone, Apple said it saw more than $140 million worth of apps and content downloaded through iTunes. As we previously reported, Christmas day was a record-breaking day for app downloads, with consumers installing more than 242 million iOS and Android apps. In addition, there are now 170,000 iPad apps and 550,000 apps in total available for iOS.
Apple also said it has sold more than 315 million iOS devices. By comparison, Google said it has seen more than 250 million Android devices activated in its earnings call.
The company produced a record quarter with $46.3 billion in revenue through sales of 37.04 million iPhones and 15.43 million iPads. If you add up all of Apples iPhone, iPad and iPod sales, that makes 67.87 million iOS devices in the holiday quarter.

[...] These numbers underscore a recent trend we’ve been hearing about from multiple research firms — that the latest iPhone has actually helped Apple close the gap with the momentum of Google’s Android platform. It’s also made up for the lull in revenue growth for third-party game developers we saw in the third quarter when we saw top-earning games producing about $3 million per month in revenue. Epic’s Infinity Blade later showed us that a developer could do $5 million per month, probably buoyed by strong holiday sales of iOS devices. Apple said it more than $140 million of apps and content were downloaded alone on Christmas Day and has paid out more than $4 billion to developers. [...]

As an iPhone porn app developer I can tell you one thing, If Apple would allow adult content apps in the app store they would have doubled that figure easy. The amount of people that consume adult entertainment is so large and it’s a shame that Apple condemns that.
