Rockstar Releases Classic GTA III for iOS and Android
Rockstar Games has re-released its classic crime and mayhem game Grand Theft Auto III for iOS and Android. Available now on both platforms for $4.99, Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition is an authentic port of the PS2 original, keeping the soundtrack and voice acting, but adding necessary updates like touch and tilt controls.
Grand Theft Auto III became an instant classic upon its release in 2001, making open-world, sandbox style gameplay the new standard for developers and spawning dozens of knockoffs and copycats. It was the best selling game of 2001 and has since gone on to sell more than 14.5 million copies.
In 2010, Rockstar released its handheld Grand Theft Auto game Chinatown Wars for iOS, but Grand Theft Auto III is the developer’s first Android game. Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take Two Interactive, has been increasing its focus on mobile gaming recently, issuing $200 million in convertible notes — a move that some analysts have seen as a precursor to a major mobile or social acquisition.
Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition is already the #2 paid app for iPhone and the #1 paid app for iPad.
