Android Crosses 10B App Installs, Grows at 1B Downloads Per Month

Google said mobile app installs on the Android platform have now crossed 10 billion and the store is now seeing 1 billion installs per month.
To put this in perspective, Android’s first billion app downloads took 20 months, the second billion took five months and the third billion took two months. Apple’s latest numbers are 18 billion downloads for iOS apps and 1 billion downloads per month, released at the iPhone 4S launch in October. Apple’s monthly download rate is probably still higher than Android’s, especially with the new iPhone. But they’ll likely reach parity soon.
As a celebration, Android is discounting certain apps to 10 cents like Glu Mobile’s Deer Hunter, Asphalt 6 HD, Color & Draw for Kids, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro, Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity and Swiftkey X. (It’s worth mentioning though that this is a kind of silly way to celebrate since many Android developers choose not to go the paid app route anyway. Also, Glu Mobile has gone deep on the freemium business model for the last two years or so.)
Google didn’t share any new numbers on device activations or give any detail on the geographic breakdown of downloads. The company also didn’t go into how well payments are performing for developers. The latest stats on device activations came about two weeks ago at Google’s music event when the company said Android had seen 200 million cumulative activations.

Google didn’t share any data on categories. :) Sorry! They were probably mostly games, I’m betting.
