Emerging Top Android Apps: Great Little War Game, Skitch and NFL Live Wallpapers
This week’s Android charts showed a lot more variety than they had in past weeks, with Droidhen’s fast rising game Defender shooting up the top grossing charts to the #2 spot, and newer titles from YoYo Games, Ace Viral and Rubicon Development all doing well on the paid charts.
New Titles on the Android Top Grossing Apps List
(Update) Defender – This week the Android top grossing charts see the fast-rising game Defender capture the #2 spot. Droidhen’s tower defense game has proven to be immensely popular since its release less than a month ago and according to its Android App store listing it has notched up almost 5,000,000 installs in that time. The game was last updated on November 17th with minor bug fixes. Defender is free and monetizes through in-app purchases.
(Update) Zynga Poker - One of the three poker apps that seem to be locked in a constant battle for dominance of the Android top grossing charts, Zynga’s entry, Zynga Poker lands in the middle this week, claiming the #5 spot. A November 11th update added Hold’em tables to the app, increased the chip stack limit and placed chips on sale for a limited time.
(Update) Nightclub Story – Sitting in the #36 spot, Nightclub Story is actually Team Lava’s least popular Story game currently on the Android top grossing chart, lagging behind #8 ranked Fashion Story, #10-ranked Bakery Story, #15-ranked Restaurant Story and #31-ranked Farm Story. Like all of the other games in the Story series, the game challenges players to manage their own business, but this time the goal is to create the best nightclub around. The app was last updated on September 14th.
NFL 3D Live Wallpaper - Airborne Studios/Cellfish Media’s officially licensed live wallpaper app NFL 3D Live Wallpaper occupies the #40 spot after gaining plenty of downloads and traction as the football season goes on. The app is free to download, and comes with an NFL themed wallpaper, but requires an additional $1.99 in-app purchase if a user wants to download a specific team’s wallpaper.
Farm Slot Free - Dragonplay’s Farm Slot Free closes out the top grossing charts this week in the #42 spot. A casino game that monetizes through the in-game purchase of gold, Farm Slot is a Vegas styled slots game with 5 reels and 15 paylines. The game was last updated on October 24th.
New Titles on the Android Free Apps List
Street View on Google Maps - Google’s Street View add on for its maps app is this week’s #2 free Android app thanks to a big spike in installs that has pushed it up the charts. The free Street View on Google Maps utility allows Android users to see street level imagery on their phones, by either searching for a specific place or dragging around the Google “Pegman” to the desired location.
Advanced Task Killer – This week’s #12 free Android app is ReChild’s popular Advanced Task Killer. A mainstay of the free charts, ATK, as its known, has racked up almost 50,000,000 downloads and last appeared on our charts all the way back in July. The utility allows users to see what applications are running in the background of their phones and force them to close.
(Update) Skitch - Evernote’s new productivity app Skitch is proving to have some staying power, appearing this week in the #30 spot on the free Android charts, up from the #33 spot it held two weeks ago. The utility allows users to add notes and annotations to photos and sketches, then upload them to Evernote, or share them via email, Twitter or Facebook. The app was last updated on September 27th.
Crack Your Screen – One of the many joke screen cracking apps out there, PortX Labs’ Crack Your Screen is this week’s #32 free android app. Unlike other apps that fake a cracked screen, the app allows a user to keep using their phone as the cracked screen image layers over the user’s applications until someone exits the app. Crack Your Screen was last updated on November 11th to add realistic LCD leak effects.
(Update) Contract Killer: Zombies - Glu Mobile’s Contract Killer: Zombies is still doing well on the charts, long after Halloween and the desire for zombie themed remakes of successful apps has passed. Currently clinging onto the top free Android charts in the #47 position, Glu Mobile revealed in its Q3 earnings call that the game had been its most successful launch to date.
New Titles on the Android Paid Apps List
Great Little War Game – New blood appears this week on the Android paid charts in the form of UK based Rubicon Development’s game Great Little War Game. The game is the #6 paid app this week after seeing installs spike very sharply in the past few days. The app is a 3D, turn based strategy game with a solid dose of humor and boasts four difficulty levels, OpenFeint achievements, three different gameplay modes and perhaps mostly importantly, proudly announces that it contains no birds or zombies. Great Little War game costs $2.99.
(Update) Robo Defense – Lupis Labs’ Robo Defense is still doing well on the paid Android charts, coming in this week at #15. The $2.99 tower defense game — which has been there for ages — features 5 maps with unlimited upgrades and difficulty levels and was last updated on October 31st with some basic bug fixes.
(Update) The Sims 3 - The last time we checked in on the EA’s The Sims 3, a limited time price drop had pushed the game to the #26 spot. Clearly the game doesn’t need too much help because nearly a month later the Sims 3 is still in the #27 spot at its regular price of $6.99. The latest entry in EA’s perennially popular Sims series, the mobile app has been a steady hit for the developer, appearing in middle of the paid app charts since September.
Reflexions – Puzzle game Reflexions occupies the #38 paid spot this week, boosted thanks to a limited time sale that has knocked the price to $1.10. The game challenges players to change move mirrors so they can reflect a ball of light around each level, collecting diamonds and avoiding obstacles. Reflexions was released on October 11th and was developed by YoYo Games.
Clowning Around – Puzzle Game - Ace Viral’s Clowning Around closes out the Android paid charts in the #40 position this week. The $0.99 puzzle game challenges players to maneuver clowns around a circus stage using seesaws, trampolines and cannons. The goal is to dunk the clowns into barrels of freezing water, presumably for the enjoyment of the audience, as it really doesn’t sound all that good for the clowns. According to the Android app store rankings the game has spiked in popularity over the past month and was last updated on November 7th.

Dungeon Defense is a very unknown but pretty good tower defense game. It’s got the right blend of good graphics, fun gameplay and the challenge factors. A lot of other tower defense games look good but don’t play well. This is my second favorite tower defense game after Defensoid. The big name tower defense games like Grave Defense don’t draw my attention these days.
