French game designer Eric Chahi changed the gaming world in 1991 with his first real hit, Another World. Released in the U.S. as Out of This World, the game set a new standard for cinematic presentation and visual quality with its hand-animated cinematics and unique, simple art style.

Now, 20 years later, Another World has arrived on iOS from Chahi, developer DotEmu and publisher BulkyPix — garnering featured App Store status from Apple in the process.

Another World is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a physicist transported into an alternate universe by a particle accelerator accident. Once there, he must run, jump and shoot his way to freedom from his alien captors while facing unusual beasts and environment-based challenges that require precise timing to surmount.

The $4.99 app presents Chahi’s game as it originally appeared, but also features an optional high resolution mode with much crisper visuals. Players can choose to toggle this mode from a menu, or can swipe on the screen during gameplay to switch between styles.

DotEmu has also implemented intuitive touch and swipe controls for this release that work especially well on the iPad’s larger screen. Music and sound effects have been enhanced over previous release of the game, as well.

For those who wish to use a more traditional control scheme, the game offers a virtual control pad and buttons, with options to change the placement of these elements to fit the player’s preference. Three difficulty modes are also available: Normal, Difficult, and Very Hard. Meant for more casual gamers, the Normal mode wasn’t present in the game’s original 1991 release, nor was the extremely challenging Very Hard mode.
